“Money Is Just an Idea”: Viral Coposit Street Interview Sparks National Conversation on Savings and Property

Young Australian’s unique view on savings goes viral

A 27-year-old Australian man has gone viral for his surprising take on money and savings. In a street interview originally posted by Coposit Street, the man revealed that he had no savings. His reason? He believes money is simply “an idea.”

The original video was shared on TikTok by Coposit earlier this year and gained solid traction. But it exploded in popularity after being reposted on X (formerly Twitter) by a finance commentary account. The clip has since clocked over 2 million views, sparking intense debate about financial literacy, savings, and generational attitudes toward money.

The story was picked up by news.com.au, one of Australia’s leading news platforms, and has since become part of a wider discussion around how younger Australians are coping with the cost of living.

“We’re part of the universe, not just society”

In the interview, the 27-year-old explained that he sees himself more as “a member of nature and the universe” than part of modern financial society. He believes the natural order of the planets and sun will take care of him.

“Most people stress about value at a specific point in their life,” he said. “But I think money is an idea that allows people to do what they want with their time.”

The clip drew mixed reactions. Some praised his spiritual and philosophical mindset. Others warned that ignoring financial planning could have serious consequences — especially in today’s high-cost environment.

One viewer joked, “Even squirrels stock up on acorns for winter.” Another wrote, “He’s one medical bill away from homelessness.”

So how much do Aussies actually have in savings?

According to Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker, the average Aussie has $42,968 in savings. However, nearly two in five Australians (38%) have less than $1,000 set aside.

Gen Z has the lowest average savings, sitting at $24,902. In comparison, Baby Boomers average $56,285, thanks in part to earlier property access and less housing pressure during their key earning years.

Finder’s personal finance expert, Richard Whitten, suggests Aussies aim to save at least three months’ worth of living expenses — though he acknowledges that’s not realistic for everyone.
